About us

Brownlow Health is a family of four practices in and around Liverpool city centre, rated ‘Outstanding’ (Brownlow Central) and ‘Good’ (all other sites) by the Care Quality Commission.

Each practice has its own separate patient list, with services tailored to the needs of those patients, but we benefit from shared ideas, values and resources across the group.

The management, secretarial, IT and HR teams operate centrally, supporting all four practices, and we have also recently developed an admin hub to further centralise these shared resources.

Otherwise, most staff are based at one particular site, but there is very much a team approach, with cross cover when needed. We also frequently have shared practice meetings and social events.

As a practice we have worked hard at ensuring our staff team reflects the diversity of the population we serve, particularly with regards to protected characteristics, and we are proud to say that this is now the case more than ever before.

The four practices are

Brownlow Health Central (list size 54,793*). This practices has 3 sites: Brownlow Health @ Student Health; Brownlow Health @ Pembroke Place; Brownlow Health @ Ropewalks
Brownlow Health @ Kensington Park (list size 7,886*)

We have over 250 staff in total, including those hosted on behalf of the Central Liverpool Primary Care Network, of which we are part.

As well as providing core medical services, in which we strive for excellence, there are many other notable aspects to our services across Brownlow Health:

Student healthcare. We work closely with the local universities, and the wider university welfare network, including hall wardens, tutors, international student services, career guild officers and university counselling services. We also host a sports physiotherapy clinic and a psychology service for University of Liverpool students. Our sites include the Student Health Centre (part of Brownlow Central) on the University of Liverpool campus, and Brownlow Health @ Marybone, which is close to many of the Liverpool John Moores University Buildings.
Homelessness care. We have a dedicated homelessness team, providing outreach care, a weekly drop in service at the practice, and inreach to facilitate safe discharge from hospital. We work closely with other agencies, with the aim to provide excellent care for this vulnerable population.
Drug and alcohol support. We have been actively involved in shared-care drug services in Liverpool, both in provision and in supporting other GP practices in improving care for patients with drug dependency. We have also worked with commisioners in improving care for those with alcohol dependency in the city centre.
Asylum seeker clinics. Dedicated clinics to meet the specific needs of this population.
Sexual Health services. Including STI testing and treating, and fitting of long acting reversible contraceptives.

We are proactive in training and development of our non-clinical staff, with many opportunities for career development.
Trans Healthcare. We have GPs with special interest in this area, and have input in to local enhanced services.
Obesity. We have GPs with special interest in obesity, and provide input to local service provision.
Eating disorder support. We have GPs with special interest in Eating disorders, and provide input to local service provision.
Research. We are part of the Mersey Primary Care Research Consortium, comprising practices across Merseyside. We were awarded the Primary Care Research Team Assessment Award by the Royal College of GPs, one of only a handful of practices Nationwide to receive such an award and the first in Merseyside.
Elderly Intermediate care centre and Nursing Homes. Providing medical support for both.
Young persons health. Development of the ‘GP Champs’ service, in collaboration with the Young Persons Advisory Service (YPAS). This is a dedicated service for young people in the city.

Brownlow Health was established in June 1994 by Dr Ed Gaynor, in collaboration with the University of Liverpool, Liverpool Health Authority and the Northwest Regional Health Authority, to meet the needs students at the University of Liverpool as well as the local population.

This collaboration produced two excellent sites. One on campus (now called Brownlow Health @ Student Health), and one in the former Liverpool Royal Infirmary (now called Brownlow Health @ Pembroke Place)

A third site, in the form of Student Health Advice Centre (SHAC) was established at the Carnatic halls of residence in south Liverpool. This was a nurse-led drop in service for students, running for many years until its close in 2018 when the university land was sold for development.

In 2005 we were successful in acquiring the personal medical services contract at Great Charlotte Street, in Liverpool City Centre. This practice was relocated to a newly refurbished premises on Argyle Street in June 2006, known as Ropewalks practice (now known as Brownlow Health @ Ropewalks).
The Ropewalks, Student Health and Pembroke Place sites are now collectively called Brownlow Central, with a unified patient list across the three sites.

In 2016 we were appointed as interim provider to Kensington Park and Princes Park Health Centre. The contract has now been secured longer term, and these sites called Brownlow Health @ Kensington Park, and Brownlow Health @ Princes Park. Each has their own separate patient list.

In 2017 we were delighted to begin providing the same fantastic service to patients at Marybone practice, based in the in the city centre. This is also a separate practice, within the Brownlow Health family, and is called Brownlow Health @ Marybone.

Brownlow Health Central was rated as ‘Outstanding’ by the care quality commission in 2017, and in the same year our Kensington Park, Princes Park and Marybone practices were all rated as ‘Good’- a notable achievement as all practices had been placed in special measures prior to Brownlow Health being awarded the contract.

In 2018 the Central Liverpool Primary Care network was formed, comprising Brownlow Health and 5 other city centre practices (9 practices in total) . The aim is to improve health and wellbeing, and addressing health inequalities in central Liverpool.

We have an extensive team delivering care to our population: Care Coordinators, Pharmacists, Pharmacy Technicians, Physiotherapists, GP Assistants, Health and Wellbeing Coaches, Social Prescribing Link Workers and Physician Associates.

In 2023 CLPCN secured additional estate at 81 London Road, forming abase for many of these services.
