Cervical Screening Outreach Event Summary
Monday, 23 March 2026Brownlow Health collaborated with The Living Well Bus, to deliver community-based cervical screening outside Central Library. The initiative aimed to reduce barriers to access, particularly for women who face challenges attending traditional healthcare settings. No appointment was necessary; this enabled people from the local community and workplaces to attend.
Key Outcomes
- Fifteen women attended, with fourteen successful screenings completed on the day.
- One woman deferred screening due to pregnancy.
- Eight participants were non‑English speaking or had English as a second language, demonstrating strong engagement from diverse communities and highlighting the importance of accessible, community-centred services.
- One staff member chose to be screened after previously delaying due to the inconvenience of attending her GP practice.
- For one‑third of attendees, this was their first-ever cervical screening, and one participant was 3 years overdue.
- A positive social outcome emerged as two women discovered they both speak Tigrinya, exchanged phone numbers, and left together — showing how community outreach can build connection as well as support health.
Impact
This outreach event demonstrates the effectiveness of taking screening services directly into the community. By offering accessible, culturally sensitive, and convenient screening opportunities, Brownlow Health successfully reduced barriers, encouraged first-time engagement, and supported women who might otherwise remain unscreened.
